Ever since my trip to New Orleans, I’ve been recreating my favorite dishes, listening to jazz nonstop, and getting lost in Louisiana stories. If you’ve been to the Big Easy, let me know if you loved it as much as I did!

What is Bananas Foster?

Bananas Foster is a classic New Orleans dessert created in the 1950s at Brennan’s Restaurant. Chef Paul Blangé named it after Richard Foster, a friend of the restaurant’s owner.

Since New Orleans was a big port for bananas, they came up with this dish to highlight the fruit in a rich, caramelized sauce with a dramatic flambé finish. It’s become a beloved treat ever since!

Why I Love This Banana Milkshake

  • Ready in minutes, it’s the perfect last-minute dessert.
  • Everyone loves a creamy, flavorful milkshake!
  • Made with simple ingredients, it’s quick and easy to whip up.

Recipe Ingredients

A glass of bananas milkshake served with a metal straw on a wooden surface.

Banana – Caramelized bananas add natural sweetness and a deep flavor. You can use a slightly overripe banana for the best caramelization.

White Rum – A splash of rum adds warmth and depth. If you don’t have rum, you can skip it and it’ll still be great.

Vanilla Greek Frozen Yogurt Creamy with a tangy balance. Let the yogurt soften a bit for easier blending.

For a full list of ingredients and amounts, see the recipe card below.

Variations

Spiced Rum – For an extra layer of flavor, try using spiced rum instead of white. The warm spices highlight the sweetness of the caramelized bananas.

Dairy-Free Yogurt – If you want a dairy-free option, coconut-based yogurt works great. It keeps the milkshake creamy while adding a subtle coconut taste.

How to Make Bananas Foster Milkshake

Step #1: Melt the butter over medium heat in a small frying pan. Slice the banana in half lengthwise and fry in the butter for 1-2 minutes per side until caramelized.

Step #2: Pour the rum into the pan (using caution when near an open flame) and toss the bananas around to absorb the liquid. Transfer the bananas and any pan sauce to the bowl of a large blender.

Step #3: Add the caramel sauce and frozen yogurt to the blender, along with an ounce of milk. Blend until smooth.

Step #4: Drizzle caramel sauce into a glass and pour in the milkshake.

Expert Tips

Use Frozen Bananas – Freeze the bananas ahead of time for a richer, creamier milkshake without needing extra ice cream or yogurt.

Flambé for Extra Flavor – If you’re comfortable, briefly light the rum in the pan. This enhances the flavor of the caramelized bananas.

Rim your Glass – Dip the rim of a tall glass in caramel sauce or crushed nuts, then place it in the freezer while preparing the milkshake.

FAQs

How should I serve this Bananas Milk Drink?

Serve the milkshake in a chilled glass with a drizzle of caramel sauce on the inside. You can top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a sprinkle of ground cinnamon for added flavor.

Can I use a different sweetener instead of caramel sauce?

Yes, you can substitute caramel sauce with maple syrup or honey for a different but still sweet flavor.

Storage Information

This Banana Milkshake is best enjoyed fresh, but if you have leftovers, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Shake or blend it again before drinking as the texture may separate slightly.

Freezing is not recommended, as it can affect the smooth consistency. For the best flavor and texture, make and serve the milkshake immediately.
