What is a Hot Toddy?

A hot toddy is a warm, comforting cocktail traditionally made with a mixture of a spirit (usually whiskey or rum), hot water, honey, lemon, and spices like cinnamon or cloves. Often enjoyed on cold nights or as a remedy for colds, it gained popularity in America by the mid-1800s as a common cold cure. Originally made with Scotch, the drink adapted to local spirits like rum and brandy when it crossed the Atlantic.

The hot toddy likely originated in 18th-century Scotland, influenced by Indian punch recipes brought back by British colonists. The Scots adapted it to their colder climate, and the name “toddy” may have come from the Hindi word “tārī,” referring to a fermented palm sap drink.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Lemons: The bright, tangy flavor of fresh lemons adds a refreshing kick that balances the sweetness and warmth.
  • Honey: A drizzle of honey brings just the right amount of natural sweetness.
  • Rum: A good quality rum adds warmth and depth with a hint of caramel sweetness.

Variations

  • Rum Variation: For something a little different, try using aged or dark rum—they add some really interesting flavors. White rum has a clean, fruity finish that keeps the toddy light and refreshing. Aged rum, or añejo, brings in notes of vanilla, coconut, almond, or caramel, making the drink smooth and complex.
  • Garnish Options: A sprig of fresh rosemary or thyme can introduce a subtle, herbal aroma. For a touch of sweetness and visual appeal, you could rim the glass with cinnamon sugar or add a candied ginger slice. A twist of orange peel or a few cranberries can also add a pop of color and a hint of fruity flavor.

How to Make Rum Hot Toddy

Step #1: Fill an electric kettle with 1 ½ cups of fresh water. Place the kettle on the stand and flip the toggle switch to the ON position.

Step #2: Cut three of the lemons in half and cut the fourth into slices. Halve three of the slices to make six half-circles. Stud each half slice with three whole cloves.

Step #3: Set out six heat-safe glasses. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon into each of the glasses, then top the lemon juice with one teaspoon of honey and an ounce of rum.

Step #4: Once the kettle has finished boiling and the toggle switch returns to the OFF position, pour ¼ cup of freshly boiled water into each glass. Stir until the honey has dissolved.

Step #5: Garnish each glass with a clove-studded lemon slice and a cinnamon stick. Grate fresh nutmeg over the top. Serve immediately.

Expert Tips

  • Let the Honey Dissolve Slowly: When stirring the hot water into the glass, give the honey time to dissolve slowly. This ensures it fully integrates into the drink, creating a smooth, balanced sweetness.
  • Steep Spices in Hot Water: Before mixing the ingredients, steep the cinnamon sticks and cloves in the hot water for a few minutes. This will infuse the water with a deeper, spicier flavor.

FAQs

Can you use tea in place of rum in a Hot Toddy?

Yes, you can! Replacing rum with a strong tea, such as Earl Grey, English Breakfast, black tea, chai, or rooibos, creates an alcohol-free version of the Hot Toddy. Herbal teas like peppermint or ginger tea also work well.

What sweetener can I use in a Hot Toddy?

Honey is the traditional sweetener for a Hot Toddy, adding a smooth, rich sweetness. However, you can also use alternatives like maple syrup, agave nectar, or brown sugar.

Storage Info

A Hot Rum Toddy is definitely best when it’s freshly made, but if you have leftovers, you can keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

To reheat, gently warm the toddy on the stove over low heat or in the microwave in short intervals, stirring occasionally. Avoid boiling to maintain the flavors and prevent overcooking the ingredients.
