Recipe Ingredients

Hoisin Sauce Sticky sweet with a deep flavor boost. It adds richness and pairs perfectly with the savory turkey filling.

Bell Pepper – Adds a slight sweetness and crunch. You could also use red, yellow, or orange bell peppers.

Red Pepper Flakes – Adds a touch of heat to the dish. You could skip it if you prefer a less spice.

Variations

Garnish – Toss in some sesame seeds for crunch or a bit of fresh cilantro to brighten things up. Chopped peanuts add texture, while a squeeze of lime keeps it fresh. Sliced radishes bring a peppery bite.

Add Crunchy Vegetables – Incorporate vegetables like water chestnuts, shredded carrots, or bamboo shoots for added texture and crunch.

Add Garlic – If you like a little garlic flavor, just add 2 cloves of garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons). Add the garlic at the same time as the onions and bell pepper in Step 1. This will give it a chance to soften and mellow slightly without burning, while still infusing the dish with great flavor.

Meat – You can easily swap the turkey with ground beef, ground chicken, or even ground pork. Just make sure to adjust the cooking time based on the meat you choose.

How to Make Asian Turkey Lettuce Wraps

Step #1: Heat the peanut oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the turkey breast in large pinches and cook for 2 minutes, breaking up large pieces as you go. Add the onions and bell pepper and cook for another 2 minutes.

Step #2: Add the fish sauce, hoisin sauce, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to the pan. Toss well to coat. Continue to cook until the turkey is cooked through and the vegetables have just softened (another 1–3 minutes).

Step #3: Remove from the pan and place in a large bowl. Top with chopped scallions.

Step #4: To serve, spoon the turkey mixture into individual lettuce leaves. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

Toast the Lettuce Wraps – For a slight twist, lightly toast the butter lettuce in a dry pan or oven for a warm, crispy touch before filling. This can add another layer of texture.

Don’t Overstuff the Lettuce – Keep the filling amount moderate to prevent the wraps from falling apart when you eat them. This ensures a better balance of texture between the lettuce and the filling.

FAQs

Can I use different types of lettuce for my healthy lettuce wraps?

Yes! Butter lettuce (also known as Bibb lettuce) is a popular choice, but you can switch it up with romaine lettuce or iceberg lettuce. Just pick whichever lettuce holds the filling best and works for you!

What can I do with my leftover turkey mixture?

You can turn them into a bowl meal with brown rice or cauliflower rice and add roasted veggies and avocado. You can also serve it with a creamy peanut sauce for extra flavor.

Storage Information

To store Asian Lettuce Wraps, keep the turkey filling in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. I don’t recommend freezing the filling as it may alter the texture.

When ready to reheat, you can warm the filling on the stove for 5-10 minutes or in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes, stirring halfway through. Be sure to keep the lettuce separate and add fresh leaves when serving to maintain crispness.
